The Indian Education Program is comprised of two programs:
- Title VI
- Johnson O’Malley
What is Title VI?
Title VI is a federally funded program through the Department of Education operating within the Office of Indian Education in Washington, D.C. Funds go directly to local programs to meet academic, social, and cultural needs, as well as college and career planning. All students of Native American descent are eligible to participate whose tribe is recognized by the federal government. Eligibility does not consider income level. Procedures for enrolling your school-age child as a recipient of the program begin with the completion of a Title VI Student Eligibility Certification Form (506), which may be obtained at the Claremore School Enrollment Center or the link below. This form must be approved by the Claremore School Enrollment Center prior to services. Examples of programs are tutors for reading & math, summer school, and instructional supplies.
What is Johnson O’Malley?
Johnson O’Malley (JOM) is a federally-funded program which provides supplemental education programs for Native American students attending public schools. Schools receive funds based on the number of Native American students attending each school. For Johnson O’Malley the requirement is: any student who can prove Indian blood by submitting a copy of a tribal membership card to the Claremore Schools Enrollment Center. Funds must be used to supplement the education of the Native American students. Examples of JOM programs are listed on the Johnson O’Malley link.
The Indian Education Parent Committee meet regularly with the program director on designing, implementing, and evaluating the Title VI and Johnson O’Malley programs. Meeting dates are listed on the Indian Education link.
