He grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Putnam City Public Schools from Kindergarten to Ninth grade. In Tenth grade, he transferred to Bethany High School and became a Broncho. During his time at Bethany, Coach Wallen played football and baseball. He attended college at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Media. This past summer, Coach Wallen completed his Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership from the University of Oklahoma.
