"One of the aspects about being a school counselor that I like most is that every day is different! I check temperatures in the car rider line every morning, do lessons throughout the day, attend meetings with parents and teachers, meet with students individually, and provide resources to parents ALL IN ONE DAY! It is truly a joy to stay busy and meet the needs of our Claremont children, families, and staff." #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

On this #wellnesswednesday, we are sharing some mental health tips for children! Mental health is just as important for children as it is for adults. Some ways to support your child's mental health are: *Love - Be there for your child and show care and love. *Support - Encourage and praise your child. *Feeling - Get to know how your child is feeling. *Exercise - Exercise has physical and emotional benefits. *Education - Learn signs and symptoms of mental health problems. *Coping - Help your child learn simple coping skills such as relaxation. * Conversation - Encourage your child to talk to you. *Listening - Make sure to listen to what your child has to say. *Rest Time - Help your child build rest time into their routine. For more information on supporting your child's mental health, contact your child's teacher or school counselor.

Today is World Read Aloud Day! Reading aloud is so important - "Children acquire language primarily through listening. Reading aloud lets children regularly hear new words in new contexts, which builds their vocabulary and helps them develop a stronger awareness of the communicative possibilities of language." #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

"Reading aloud with children provides benefits for adults too. The quality time spent together promotes bonding and strengthens relationships, making it easier for children to develop their social, communication, and interpersonal skills." #CPSZEBRAPRIDE #WORLDREADALOUDDAY

"Recently I discovered there's actually a name for the counseling approach I most closely follow. It's called bibliotherapy. Bibliotherapy involves using literature to teach and help others practice various skills. Reading to children is one of my favorite things, and I love using books in my lessons! The Claremore Public Schools Foundation awarded a grant for me to use at Claremont. I am purchasing some of my favorite titles to use with bibliotherapy!" #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

"There are many roles in the school counselor position. We wear so many hats! I believe one of the most important roles is helping children (individually, in small groups, and in whole class settings) practice social and emotional skills. Some of my favorite themes are: Kindness, Whole Body Listening, and The Power of Yet." #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

This week is National School Counseling Week! This week we hope to focus on the unique contribution our School Counselors have upon the public school system. School counselors are so important to our school buildings, and we would like to introduce you to ours, Mrs. Sheila Urbonas. When asked what influenced her to become a school counselor, she replied, "After being a first grade teacher and special education teacher for over twenty years, I thought I wanted to leave the education field. I received my masters in counseling from Southern Nazarene University with the plan to work for a counseling agency. I worked in that field for a short time, but really missed the education setting. I missed the camaraderie of working alongside educators and being in a building full of children. Becoming a school counselor is the best of both worlds!"
