7th grade English students in Mrs. Franklin's class are participating in a mock trial to learn how to state a claim and provide evidence to support it. This is a great way to teach students about public speaking and building confidence in front of a group. It also teaches persuasive writing skills. Mrs. Franklin makes a great judge, too, don't you think?

Can a persimmon seed predict our winter weather?Mrs. Westfall’s class decided to test this theory. According to folklore, if you crack open a persimmon seed and look at the shape inside, it can forecast the winter weather. If it's fork shape, winter will be mild. If the seed is spoon shaped, there will be lots of snow, and if it's knife shape, the winter will be bitterly cold that cuts like a knife.
So what do this year’s seeds say about the upcoming winter? The class looked at the differences between male and female pine cones. They also cracked open persimmon seeds and found spoon shapes in all the seeds. Looks like we will be getting lots of snow according to our seed investigation!

We know that being present is important for your child’s learning progress.
What can you do to help them be at school every day?
• Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
• Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
• Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.

The TOSS Grant is a grant used to fund opportunities in Reading and ELL classes sponsored by Cherokee Nation. This grant funds supplies for activities used in the classroom to promote reading as a foundation to a courageous career. We are trying to show students in REAL life how reading is the foundation for ALL things in life. We must build good foundations of reading to grow up one day and see life after Junior High, showing our students some options for their futures. Today, Dan Newbury from Tulsa Fire Department shared his story of struggling with reading as a young man, and how he has pressed through to become the Fire Captain that he is today! Thank you Dan! You were terrific!
