On this #wellnesswednesday, we want to share how important it is to encourage positive self-talk in your children. Self-talk is your inner voice, or the conversation in your head throughout waking hours. Positive self talk is talking to yourself in a kind, reassuring and optimistic way. This is so important for children, because what they learn now is what they will do into adulthood. Here are 6 strategies to teach and practice positive self talk: 1. Model it 2. Create a list of positive self-talk statements 3. Talk about the benefits of positive self-talk 4. Incorporate crafts as a way to remember to use positive self-talk 5. Practice changing negative talk into positive 6. Talk about real-life situations where using positive self talk might be difficult #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

4th grade students created posters with their vocabulary groups to help with the story, The Last Great Race. Posters are great visual references for students to be able to look back on when struggling to remember a concept that's been taught. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

As a part of National School Counseling Week, we want you to get to know our school counselor, Mrs. McMillan a little better. Q: What do you think is the most important characteristic of a school counselor? "I would say compassion and patience are two important characteristics a counselor needs. A lot of the students have experienced some sort of trauma and we need to be compassionate and understanding of their situation. And oftentimes students who experience trauma struggle with maintaining in the classroom and act out, so we need to be patient with them as we help correct their behavior." - Kristy McMillan, School Counselor #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

All parents have different parenting styles, but the goal is the same: to raise happy, healthy, confident children. On this #wellnesswednesday, we want to share strategies for increasing self-esteem in your children. It may not seem like it, but children as young as 8 years old can begin to doubt themselves which can lead to a crisis of self-esteem. Here are a few ways to set your children up for success in the area of their self-esteem: - Create a safe, supportive and accepting home environment - Stop shielding your children from failure - Praise EFFORT, not perfection - Set boundaries and stay consistent - Let your children feel their emotions. Children with an understanding of their own self-esteem are resilient and prepared to go into the world without fear of failure. Do you have anything you would add to this list? How do you help your children grow a healthy self-esteem? #CPSZEBRAPRIDE
