The Book Fair is almost here!! Get ahead by setting up an E-Wallet for your student now!! "Book Fair eWallet is a digital payment option that’s a safe, convenient alternative to cash. It's easy to create an eWallet for students to shop the Fair or for teachers to set up an eWallet to build classroom libraries. The account owner simply adds funds and/or invites family and friends to contribute. At the time of checkout, the eWallet account can be looked up on the register or scanned for payment at the Fair." National Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 5th! The Wednesday Walking PALs group at Volunteers for Youth, community leaders and Claremont students will observe National Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 5th. All Claremont students, parents and community members are invited to meet at the north parking lot for First Baptist Church at 7:15 am to start the 8-block walk to Claremont. “Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment,” said Lindsey Martin, Rogers County TSET Healthy Living Program Coordinator at Volunteers for Youth. “The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.” Walking to school is an easy way for students to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives, helping them develop healthy habits for a lifetime. Benefits of walking include improving heart health, reducing stress, regulating weight, increasing brain power and improving sleep quality – all of which can help children live well and perform better in school. The Wednesday Walking PALs project starts each school year the Wednesday after Labor Day for both Claremont and Roosa students and more information is available in the school offices. The project was started six years ago and follows the TSET Healthy Living Program guidelines for a “walking school bus” where adults accompany a group of children on a safe route to each school. The kids learn walking safety and discuss a new healthy living topic each week Joining your child in walking to school, or any other time, can help reinforce the importance of physical activity and make it a fun, family affair. For more information about getting involved with Wednesday Walking PALs, please contact Volunteers for Youth at (918) 343-2530. Visit ShapeYourFutureOK.com for great ideas to make walking fun. Shape Your Future is a community health education intervention that encourages Oklahomans to eat better, move more and be tobacco free.
