In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Mrs. Gaylord's music class has been learning about his life and what he stood for. They discussed what dreams we have and how to make them a reality. They also took key words and found their rhythms, followed by making their own compositions with those words. This is a wonderful, creative way to honor the memory of Dr. King and develop musical knowledge. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

This sweet second grade class utilized their Scholastic News magazines to learn about the impactful life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They later used the information from the source to organize a timeline about his life. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Part of the reason Westside students and staff thrive is due to the culture that has been established throughout the building. One of our Great Expectations states, "We will recognize every effort and applaud it." This isn't just expected from the students, but modeled from everyone in the building. Staff regularly post shout-outs to show appreciation for the effort and dedication that is continuously shown. It's a great day to be a Zebra! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Everyone absolutely loves this year's shirt designed by our wonderful Westie, Pachia. Yonger sister, Mayla, proudly wears her sister's winning design alongside her big sister. These young ladies have such a beautiful bond and set a great example to other Westsiders by supporting one another. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

McCaw’s fantastic first graders began a new project in art this week. Our wonderful art teacher, Mr. McClurg, worked alongside these Westies to inspire cool new creations. "You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have." -Maya Angelou #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Mrs. Collins' second grade class read Hollywood Chicken this week. They practiced vocabulary by finding synonyms and using them in a sentence. Mrs. Collins gave each student a special rainbow pen as a gift! Students used these to illustrate what each vocabulary word meant. What a great way to make challenging tasks fun! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

RUNNING CLUB UPDATE

Coach Faulconer introduced fifth grade students to Fruit Loop tag. Players kick the hula hoop and try to avoid getting hit with the “fruit loop”. If you get hit, you go directly to the cereal bowl to do warm-up exercises like crunches and sit-ups. These Westies love the competition and good workout. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Westside's incredible counselor, Mrs. Lyons, visits classrooms around Westside to teach social and emotional skills. This class helped identify emotions by viewing facial expressions and body language. Westside students love having time for the excitement and love that she brings to each lesson. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE
