Cherokee Heritage Days was a huge hit at Catalayah!! 3rd-5th graders got to enjoy hearing stories from Robert Lewis. He did some Native American storytelling, and also talked about some of the Native American traditions and cultures. There was even some Native American artwork hanging behind him, that the kids were asking him about.
Robert Lewis is a Cherokee National Treasure and an award-winning storyteller, author, and artist of Cherokee, Navajo, and Apache descent. Robert has appeared on local television and radio programs to share the wisdom and beauty of Native stories.
Robert became a storyteller in spring 2003 while he was working at the Cherokee Heritage Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, as a tour guide for the ancient village. Robert Lewis said, “I had the opportunity to tell this story to a group of schoolchildren and parents waiting for a tour to begin. During the course of the tale, Barbara Girty, who at the time was in charge of group tours for the museum, heard me and so began this unique journey I find myself on.”
Have your kids had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Lewis tell stories??? He is amazing. Ask them when they get home about his storytelling!

WIN TIME!!!
WIN stands for “What I Need”, and refers to interventions and/or enrichment. During WIN time, some students receive a 25-minute intervention to work on specific math or reading skills. They might work with their classroom teacher, or a specials teacher or even other staff members in the building.
Who does your child work with during WIN time??
I stopped by some of the older students win groups this week. Stay tuned for some pictures of the younger groups.
WIN is for 1st-5th graders.

Did you hear about the Pumpkin Elf that made a mess of Mrs. Newman's kindergarten room??? They couldn't believe it when they walked into their classroom last week.
They read the book The Mystery of the Pumpkin Elf. The Pumpkin Elf is very tricky. He does tricks and then leaves treats. He messed up their room by getting everything out that is orange (his favorite color). He then left them clues to look for him throughout the school. They never found him, but he left them pumpkin brownies in their classroom.

Ms. McCracken's 5th grade Science classes had so much fun during their Science experiment last week.
The kids were given a cup with a mixture of 5 components and had to separate each one into its own container.
They experimented with different methods of separating their mixture. They were given magnets, colanders, cheese cloth, and coffee filters to separate the components based on their properties. They came up with a lot of great methods of filtration!
