Breakfast & lunch menu for September 2024 🥗 🍳 🥛

REMINDER - In honor of the Labor Day holiday, CPS will be closed on Monday, September 2nd.
"Before the reward, there must be labor. You plant before you harvest. You sow in tears before you reap joy." Ralph Ransom
Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. The labor movement created it in the late 19th century, and it became a federal holiday in 1894.
This weekend, as we spend time with our families and friends, celebrate the value of an honest day's work, the people who built America, and our nation's advancements because of the American labor force.

Ms. Palmer and her third graders brainstormed ways to work through problems and expected behaviors during the school year and in real life scenarios. We love to see our Westie's setting the example!

Cooking with Classen 🍪
The first week back to school, Mrs. Classes's class read "The Kissing Hand" which is a book about Chester the Raccoon missing his parents at the beginning of the school year, and encourages students to be courageous and open to trying new things.
When her class finished this project, they all got to make sugar cookie hands with chocolate kisses in the middle.

Today is National Dog Day 🐕
This morning at Rise & Shine, Mrs. Lyons shared about her dog, Maverick, who is 9 months old.
Maverick will soon train to serve in places like hospitals, airports, nursing homes and schools to help with the physical and psychological health of children through the human-animal bond. All of this has been made possible through the nonprofit organization K9's In Direct Service (KIDS, Inc.).

Mrs. Sanders First graders drank "Jitter Juice" on the first day of school last week to help calm the first day jitters! 🧃

Mrs. Collins & her 2nd class may have had some A/C issues today, but that didn’t stop them from learning & having fun while doing it.
They headed to the STEM lab with clipboards & a good attitude for some old school learning for the rest of the afternoon.
We are so thankful for such a strong & resourceful staff at Westside! Hot temps & all, our determined educators find a way for our kids! 💪🏽❤️🦓

Hey Westie families! You might have seen this information at Meet the Teacher, but here is more in depth information!
QuikTrip has generously donated four giftcards for us to giveaway as part of our efforts to address chronic absenteeism. Each quarter all students who have two or less UNEXCUSED absences will be entered into the drawing. Excused absences will not count against a student's entry.
🍎Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. attendanceworks.org
🍎Chronic absence numbers have almost doubled from pre-Covid-19. attendanceworks.org
🍎Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back. attendanceworks.org
🍎Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence. attendanceworks.org
🍎When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating. attendanceworks.org
If you are having trouble getting your student to school, please reach out to our school counselor, Mrs. Lyons for additional support.
