🎶Now I Know My ABC’s🎶 In addition to focusing on one letter each week, Pre-K has been playing a variety of matching games where students look at a printed letter and find the plastic manipulative piece to match. Our 5th grade had such a great time at JA BizTown, and they did a fantastic job! This program allowed our students to operate banks, manage restaurants, write checks, and vote for mayor. The program helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. We had opening ceremonies, interviews, voting processes, newscasting, and so much more! Westside now proudly introduces a teacher that is not new but has recently moved to our 2nd-grade wing, Mrs. Nicole Woods! ❤ "I have a husband and three children. My favorite thing to do is chill by my pool and hang out with my family! I graduated from both RSU and NSU. I was able to stay home with my children until my youngest started kindergarten. All three of my children have gone through Westside since pre-K! So, it only made sense for me to work here! I have been at Westside for 5 years! I started as a para in Special Education and then taught kindergarten for three years and am now in second grade! I enjoy hanging out with my family, swimming in the summer, gardening, and traveling to the beach! Fun Fact: I went to cosmetology school and am also a licensed esthetician and make-up artist!" Mrs. Woods's class made x-rays of their own using black crayons, construction paper, and oil! That picture is shared below. Ladies and gentlemen, Westside is proud to introduce you to our 2021-2022 Teacher of the Year... Coming from our 3rd-grade wing... ✨MS. CYNTHIA NICKS!✨ Ms. Nicks has been at Westside for 11 years, one year as a paraprofessional, and ten years teaching. She is a zebra through and through! When asked what her favorite part about teaching is, she will immediately tell you that it's the kids. Her students are her "why" and she proves that every day! Westside finished up our Fall Food Drive!! We had SO MUCH food donated! Thank you to all those who brought food and other items to make this happen! There are going to be some very happy families this holiday season thanks to our amazing students! With that being said we are proud to announce our grand totals and winning wing! Coming into first place with a total of 721 items is..... 3rd grade!!! Grade Level Totals: Kindergarten- 313 1st Grade-272 2nd Grade-302 3rd Grade-721 4th Grade-225 5th Grade-196 These totals do not include the food items brought in by the Running Club Turkey Trot! Our friends in Mrs. Sweet's class are clue-solving detectives!! These students solved math problems to find a clue and had to eliminate suspects based on the clues! This activity required the students to use their critical and deductive thinking skills. They finished up the math mystery, Case of The Thankless Turkey, on Monday!! Now introducing another fabulous Kindergarten teacher of ours, Mrs. Brenda McClurg!! "I teach Kindergarten and have been teaching for 28 years. All at Westside! I’ve also taught first grade and second grade. I graduated from Claremore high school and Oklahoma State University. I am married to Mark and we have 5 children, two grandchildren, 3 dogs, and 3 cats. My favorite movie is Sweet Home Alabama. My favorite restaurant is El Azteca. My interesting fact is growing up I played the piano in a family country music band called Stonehorse. We love our center time! During this time, we work on how to get along with others and problem solving. We are also working hard on learning our letters and sounds and numbers." Thank you, Mrs. McClurg! Westside would like to introduce you to one of our fantastic Kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Katy Cummings! "I graduated from Claremore High School and have taught at Westside for 13 years. I have received my Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood Education from Northeastern State University. I am married to my high school sweetheart who is also a fellow educator who teaches at Claremore High School. We have two children and two dogs. " Favorite things: I love to garden, read, travel when I can, and spend time with family and friends. Fun fact: I have been to the top of Pikes Peak! Thank you for sharing with us, Mrs. Cummings!! Our 5th-grade students will be attending JA BizTown on Wednesday. Monday, they spent the day preparing for their trip. They created a Newspaper article, a radio commercial, and a TV advertisement. They even updated their checkbooks and made sure their registers were current. Students that have "jobs" in the newspaper also conducted interviews for their articles! There are many professional jobs that they will take on and are so excited to be bankers, paramedics, attorneys, etc! Great job, 5th-grade! Every day is a good day to thank a veteran! Westside wants to say thank you to all those that have served our country! Our students were so proud to learn all about what you did and all the sacrifices you made. There were so many great lessons, crafts, and activities yesterday! FRIDAYS WITH FRAZIER Congratulations to our eight Site Teacher of the Year recipients. Their colleagues chose them to represent their site for consideration for the 2021-2022 Claremore Public Schools Teacher of the Year, announced later this month. Over the next several months, each teacher will create a dossier including a personal biography and essays on education issues and trends, community involvement, philosophy of teaching, and the teaching profession. A committee will review these documents, a lesson video and host an interview with each candidate. Stay tuned to learn more about each of these fantastic teachers and why their peers choose them to represent their school. Once again, we are proudly introducing one of our teachers! This time, from the first-grade hall, Mrs. Nicole Thomason! "I grew up and went to school in Claremore. This is my 7th year teaching first grade. I taught for 5 years in Tulsa, then began teaching in Claremore last year. I love hanging out with my husband and my three-year-old daughter! I love vanilla Coke from Sonic, hot caramel macchiatos from Starbucks, and Reese's. My favorite thing to do in my downtime is to read a good book! When I was younger, I competed in figure skating for several years. In the first picture, my students worked together, showing cooperation and teamwork to clean out a pumpkin, separate the seeds, and count how many seeds were in each pumpkin. In the last pictures, you can see our class is working on writing and publishing a book. We worked together to brainstorm ideas for a book. The students then voted on the ideas presented until there was one topic left. They chose: Wintertime. After this was picked, students worked together to brainstorm ideas within this topic of what they could write about. We are now working on our first drafts!" Westside is now proud to introduce you to one of our wonderful 4th-grade teachers, Ms. Palmer!! "I’m 25 years old for now, but that’ll change in 2 weeks. I graduated from Woodland High School. I received my Bachelor’s degree from RSU/Cameron University and my Master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. I have a dog named Suki and a cat named Allie. I love books, the gym, and spending time outdoors with Suki. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family. I am addicted to coffee. My favorite local shops are Green Eyes & Clever Fox. A fun fact about myself is that my picture was published in Seventeen magazine when I was in high school." Ms. Palmer also wanted to share a little bit about what she and her friends are currently working on! "Two of the pictures shared are of a project we are doing. We are participating in a postcard exchange with classrooms across the United States. Friday, students were typing the information that we will put on our postcards. We also had a surprise guest during our spelling test last week. Stitch came in and took it. He passed with flying colors! The last three pictures are from a day we had an inside recess. We had a great time! Students were showing the life principles of friendship and cooperation when they played games together." How cool is that?!?! Thank you for sharing with us, Ms. Palmer!
