Introducing Alysa Peterson, a teacher at Westside Elementary. With her fourth year of teaching around the corner, including two at Claremore Public Schools, Alyssa proves that teaching isn't just a profession—it's her calling. Let's dive into her story and discover why she's making waves in the world of education. She always knew she wanted a job that helped others and gave back to the community. At first, she was unsure what that might look like, and then teaching came up. However, she was young and steered away from teaching, so she changed her major to Nursing. Unhappy with this potential new career field, she knew it was not her calling. So she went back to her original major and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She felt at home and knew it was what she was called to do!

Why Statement:

“It’s very simple- the KIDS. I believe every child deserves an equal opportunity to learn! We are all wired differently, so how can we learn the same way? I love finding new ways to help my students learn something new! I honestly had no idea how much becoming a teacher at Westside would change me as a person. The kids make me a better person! I want my classroom to be their safe place where they always feel loved and encouraged. Relationships with my students are vital to me, which is my number one goal as soon as they walk through my door.

It’s the light bulb moment for me! When I see a student struggling for so long on something and finally try to get it! I love seeing my students gain that confidence and be proud of themselves when they learn something new. Also, there will always be a couple of students that take longer to open up, and when they do, it just warms my heart knowing they feel safe and comfortable enough to be their authentic selves in my classroom!

“Focus on the step in front of you, not the whole staircase.”

This is a quote that I try to live by in my classroom and my life. It can be so hard sometimes to focus on what’s in front of you and not the future instead of enjoying the moment and focusing on one thing at a time!
