CPS Postpones Start Date of School to August 27th

20-21 Academic Calendar BOE Approved 8.5.20

This afternoon Claremore Public School Board of Education held a special meeting to consider the academic calendar for the 2020-21 school year.  The recommendation from Superintendent Bryan Frazier was to push the start date from August 20, 2020, to August 27, 2020.  This change only affects the start date and not the way in which we deliver the instruction.  Our goal is to begin face-to-face traditional instruction on August 27, for those families that selected the traditional learning option. Claremore Virtual School (CVS) will also start on August 27.  The Board of Education unanimously approved the recommendation.

The delay allows teachers time for professional development in preparation for the new technology; devices, curriculum, digital resources, and new safety measures, will all be part of the professional development before the beginning of school.

"The three days originally scheduled for PD are simply not sufficient to prepare for all the changes we will be implementing in the school year," said Mr. Frazier.  He added, "Our goal is to make sure our staff and our families have the tools, resources, and knowledge to participate in high quality, rigorous education in any situation."

There are changes to the previous calendar, to accommodate the new start date.

  • Students will be in school on Friday, September 4 for a full day of instruction, originally scheduled as a day out for the Labor Day weekend. This date will not be a distance learning day.
  • The first distance learning day will be Friday, September 11.
  • The two professional development days scheduled for September 29, 2020, and February 26, 2021, will now be instructional in-session days. The professional development days are now front-loaded to accommodate the additional training days for teachers on August 20 and 21, 2020.
  • May 27, 2021, is now the last day of school for students.
  • May 28, 2021, is now the last day for teachers.

"We need everyone to do their part to keep the numbers down, wear a mask, practice social distancing, wash your hands, and use hand sanitizer. Please stay safe so we can start school," added Frazier.

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we have worked hard to develop a plan that focuses on health and safety, as well as, delivering instruction at a high level.

It is important to understand that information surrounding COVID-19 continues to evolve rapidly. No plan can be perfect, but we have to have a plan to build around as we prepare to go back to school. We will continue to take a measured, methodical and flexible approach to ensure we can adapt to situations and new scenarios as they arise. Our plan will change as the school year progresses and the situation continues to unfold.

Our RETURN TO LEARN plan is an outline of education options, new procedures and enhanced safety protocols that were designed to meet the unique needs of our students and their families, as well as our teachers and staff. Please remember that physical distancing and enhanced health protocols are intended to mitigate, not eliminate, the risk, as no single action or set of actions will completely eliminate the risk of contracting COVID-19. However, the safety of our students, teachers and staff remains a priority and we are committed to providing learning environments where students can continue to learn and grow, knowing that adults are working hard each and every day to protect them.

We will undoubtedly face challenges this school year. We will continue to put children first and make decisions we believe are in the best interest of our students, teachers and staff. And, if we continue to work collaboratively, speak with kindness, respect differing viewpoints and demonstrate civility and grace, we will get through this together.

Today’s Fridays With Frazier briefly introduces the RETURN TO LEARN plan and the changes approved by the Board of Education on 7.16.20.

Thank you for your patience as our team plans for the upcoming school year. Please know that our students' and staff's health and safety continue to remain our top priority.

We know you have questions such as:

  • How will we safely and effectively return to in-classroom learning?
  • When will the school year start? How will the district mitigate risk?
  • What options do you have if you do not feel safe coming back to school in-person?

Please know we are thoroughly working through these questions and many others.

Our first "Fridays With Frazier" for the summer addresses some of those questions. We will continue to provide information weekly on all our communication platforms, including our website and mobile app.
