With CHS Basketball Senior Night coming up tomorrow night we have a special #TBT post for you today. One hundred years ago, the Claremore boys basketball team took to the court for the very first time. The 1920 yearbook states that this was the first year the boys' team "tried" the sport. The story about the girls' team was vague about the first year they played, but in 1820 they won more games than the boys did that year.

Back in November, Jack Kissee Ford teamed up with Claremore Public Schools for the Ford Drive4URSchool program resulting in a $1500 donation. Thank you to the 75 teachers, parents, and community members who came to test drive a Ford and complete the survey. Kissee has committed to hosting another Drive4URSchool Spring 2021, at which time Kissee Ford hopes to have 300 people test drive so that they can donate the maximum of $6000 to CPS. Here Steve Kissee and Lyle Johnson from Jack Kissee Ford present Mr. Frazier, CPS Superintendent, a check that will be divided between all six schools participating. #StrongSchoolsStrongCommunityZebra Strong #CPSZEBRASTRONG

You've probably learned or heard about DNA, but have you ever seen it? As you may know, DNA is present in every cell of all plants and animals and determines all genetic traits of the individual organism. Mrs. Tietz's and Mrs. Simpson's class had guest speakers from the Noble Research Institute to help with this lesson. Each class extracted DNA from strawberries, put it in vials, and were able to take it home. Now that's a "berry" fun way to learn about DNA! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Dr. Jon Ramsey, Associate Professor of Agricultural Education at Oklahoma State University, spent some time at Claremore High School this week observing Ms. Jerryca Haller, student-teacher, teach her agriculture communications class. Students learned the six components of professional email correspondence. Ms. Haller comes to us via Imperial, California. When asked why she wanted to teach ag, she shared that she would like to have the same impact on today's students that her ag teachers had on her as a high school student. They helped her develop an appreciation for everything agriculture does, not only for her local community but also for the state and the nation. Jerryca would like to help her students in the same way by showing them the importance of agriculture since we all need to eat. Ms. Haller is paired with our seasoned AgEd teacher, Ms. Jessalyn Schrock. Ms. Schrock is in her seventh year at CHS. Among other successes, she is responsible for coaching two, state winning AgriScience Fair projects, a National 3-Star Chapter, and acquiring a Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education - Plant Science certification. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE #teachag #nationalFFAWeek

Claremore High School's mission is to ensure high levels of learning in ALL areas and prepare ALL students with skills for success. It is our vision to encourage, empower, and educate ALL students to become lifelong learners and productive members of society. This week CHS science and social studies departments were provided a workday to meet together as a Professional Learning Community (PLC) and work on strategies to achieve our mission and vision. Teachers spent time planning pathways for the future, examining alignment to the ACT, discussing vertical alignment within their curriculum, and collaborating on how to use common formative assessment data to improve student learning. PLCs enable teachers to continually learn from one another via shared visioning and planning, as well as an in-depth critical examination of what does and doesn't work to enhance student achievement. This exercise was an opportunity to be intentional in bringing the content from the weekly meetings into a strategic department plan. The mathematics and English departments worked through the same process earlier this fall. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

The Golden Norsemen and the Bulldogs will gain a Zebra on the field this fall. In conjunction with #nationalsigningday, two Claremore Zebras signed their official letter of intent to play football. MASON HAYES, CHS linebacker, signed with McPherson College in Kansas. DYLAN KEDZIOR, CHS receiver, signed with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami. Hayes chose based on a feeling of home and Kedzior a chance to perfect his craft; both will seize the opportunity to play the sport they love and continue their post-secondary education. #studentathlete #CPSZEBRAPRIDE #OnceAZebraAlwaysAZebra

With support from Oklahoma GEAR UP, the Parent Leadership Academy provides parents with the tools and training to understand what students are expected to learn and be able to do. They learn the leadership skills necessary to develop parent-school-community partnerships to significantly increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in college. CPS Gear Up PLA members are Scott Newton and Alida Gonzales. They attended the first of three training sessions last month. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE
