What was your dream in elementary school? It looks like the first female president will be from Catalayah!! We also have a rapper, NFL or NBA player, and several students may have a career in social work or humanitarian aid. Mrs. Desy's 2nd-grade class created this "I Have A Dream" project after their lesson about Martin Luther King Jr. and the dream he had for his kids. Students then shared their dreams for the future. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Mrs. Faught's 2nd grade class at Catalayah completed a mini-unit on Friendship. They read books about friendships and how to be a good friend! They tied it into their language arts lesson on adjectives by brainstorming words to describe "friend"! The students also used adjectives to "sprinkle" in the classroom's cupcake art and writing activity! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Ethan Grimett selected as All-State Defensive Lineman. “I'm so proud of Ethan. Ethan played linebacker for years, but he was willing to switch to the defensive line his senior year because that is where his team needed him. His unselfish attitude paid off in a big way. I look forward to coaching Ethan one last time this summer in the All-State game.” - Coach Hurt The All-State game East vs West will be Jul 29, 2022. Of course, we all know moms are their kids’ biggest fan, and in this family that is definitely true. “This was his first year in the position and to get picked for All-State speaks volumes of his work ethic. Our family is so proud of you Big E! A huge thanks to the coaches who have poured into him over the years. He’s had an amazing career as a Zebra and gets to suit up one more time as an All-Stater!” - Michelle Eaton UPDATE - Ethan has committed to play for the Falcons at Friends University in Wichita, KS. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Chelsea Mize is the newest member of our CPS Board of Education (BOE). Mize began her service to her alma mater in 2021. Chelsea, born and raised a Zebra, graduated from CHS in 2003. She is the third generation to graduate from CHS, preceded by her father and grandfather; she looks forward to her children being the fourth generation of Zebras. She continued her post-secondary education at NSU, earning a degree in Early Childhood Education from NSU. Mize is the owner of The Cranberry Merchant and Cranberry Estate Sales. Her volunteer efforts have been with the Green Country Chrysalis Board of Directors and currently on the Claremore Main Street Board. She is married to Matt Mize and has two children: Titus and Rosie, both part of this dazzle of Zebras. When asked to reflect on a teacher that made a difference in her life, Mize has a unique story she shared, “ I can remember all of my teachers, and each one left a positive impact on my life and many of them I get to enjoy friendships with still today. (Okay, now that I've sat here and thought about each teacher, some of which are now gone, I'm now teary.) Thinking back over each teacher, I can remember some of the curricula they taught, but their most significant impact on me was the lessons of self-worth. They showed me love, grace, compassion, tough love, steadiness, self-worth, hard work, and a love for learning. Their impact has sculpted me into to person I am today. Being the daughter of a teacher and the stepdaughter of a high school coach, it didn't matter which teacher's classroom I was in; if the teacher was in the school building, they were my teacher! Those teachers and coaches were the village that raised me. I laughed, cried, embarrassed myself, was fed by them, driven home, and got a LOT of life coaching along the way. The Zebra family was MY family. (Okay - I'm teary again!).”

Shane Huey was appointed to fill the Ward 5 seat in 2020 and then ran unopposed in 2021 and will complete a five-year term. After graduating from Barnsdall High School in 1991, he attended Northeastern State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He is a CI Engineer at Reading Truck Body. He became a Zebra in 1995 after he and his wife, Amanda, chose to move to Claremore and make a home on the same street she had lived growing up. His wife grew up a Zebra, and now they have two Zebra daughters. Shaylee attends Claremont Elementary and plays softball. Samantha attends Claremore High School and is a State Championship dance team member. His high school English teacher, Steve Bowling, was his most influential teacher. He recalls, “At the time, he was a 4th-degree black belt in taekwondo. He brought the same dedication he used in taekwondo to the classroom. He was hard and held you accountable. He expected more from you than you thought you could give. He pushed you to the max but was the first to say congratulations.” When asked this question, he shared that it made him reflect on his educational experience and motivated him to reach out to Mr. Bowling to share his appreciation. We are sure Mr. Bowling would be proud of Mr. Huey, who serves his community and public education. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Everything is uncertain about who is at school and who isn't, so teachers overcome, adapt, and adjust! So in art---Murals it is! Students discussed all the murals in Claremore - even graffiti on trains (what's the difference)? They are now working together from K - 5th grad to create murals with oil pastels to hang in the halls of Westside. This project was an art lesson and a lesson on using art to find our way through changes & uncertainties. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE ▶ https://youtu.be/aaAYqe8e4Kg

Rodrick "Rod" Henry, a Claremore High School Class of 1980 graduate, began his service to his alma mater as a CPS Board of Education member for Ward 4 in 2015. Serving in his second term, he holds the office of Clerk this year. Henry became a Zebra in 8th grade when he transferred into Will Rogers Junior High from Verdigris when it was a K-8 dependent school system. But he’ll be quick to tell you he’s remained a Zebra saying, “Once a Zebra, Always a Zebra.” He is married to Wendee Pauley Henry, CHS Class of 1984, and has two children: Zac, CHS Class of 2012, and Ashley, CHS Class of 2017. His wife is an officer for the CHS Alumni Association and oversees the Alumni Asso. Scholarship. After graduating, he went on to earn an A & P License and works at American Airlines. Henry is actively involved in the Claremore Public School Foundation, First Presbyterian Church of Claremore (Feed the Zebras), and Claremore Elks Lodge. He spent years volunteering and supporting fundraising efforts for booster clubs while kids were in school in CPS and was a little league coach for soccer, baseball, and football. His most impactful teacher was a difficult decision because he has had so many great teachers, but he finally narrowed it down to Mr. Norm Vetter, his Drafting I & II teacher. As a mechanical engineer, he still uses many skills today that he taught me so many years ago. All his students loved him.

Roosa is enjoying new Promethean Boards! A Promethean Board is a brand of a whiteboard that projects an image from a laptop or computer. It is also an interactive board that uses specialized pens or touch. The IT Department chose touch screen panels for Kindergarten through 3rd grade because the students already use touch devices daily and are familiar with this technology. These boards were purchased with #ZEBRABond219 funds and are currently being installed in the Kindergarten through 3rd classrooms. Roosa thanks the Claremore community for investing in these educational tools and our students' futures! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE
