ME IN A BAG?
Creating a community is essential to the learning environment and a classroom is the gathering place. We want all children can feel secure, nurtured and supported by the environment, each other, and the teacher. Classrooms across the district plan several activities to get to know our new classroom friends and celebrate their common interests and differences.
Mrs. Wallis' Worth Wonders at Catalayah shared their "Me In A Bag" items representing themselves with their classmates. In the process, students celebrate their individuality, build trust, gain confidence speaking in front of their new friends, and practice their interpersonal skills.

From octagonal stop signs and rectangular doors, to triangular roofs and circular wheelsโshapes are everywhere. Learning shapes not only helps children identify and organize visual information, it helps them learn skills in other curriculum areas including reading, math, and science. For example, an early step in understanding numbers and letters is to recognize their shape. Learning shapes also helps children understand other signs and symbols.
Mrs. Books Curious Characters at Westside started the school year off working in groups with manipulatives to help reinforce these skills.

These outfits are purrrfect!
Some of our Kinder girls and teachers were all matched up in their cheetah prints! We love the surprise and excitement on a student's face when there's been a case of accidental matching!

"The arts are essential. They teach students innumerable lessonsโpractice makes perfect, small differences can have large effects, collaboration leads to creativity. The arts also teach children that there are several paths to take when approaching problems and that all problems can have more than one solution." - Americans for the Arts

1st grade students in Mrs. Ward's class are working on number words.
To enhance learning, they did a partner activity. One kid rolled a dice and both kids wrote the number word for the rolled number. It was super fun!

ARTS IN EDUCATION WEEK
CPS is fortunate to continue to offer a variety of the Arts in our educational program.
Students in Art I at CHS have been exploring the restricted use of line in creating artwork. There was no color or shading allowed. They had to recreate or design an interesting but simple line drawing to execute in puffy paint on chipboard. Students began stretching aluminum around their puffy paint drawings. Students also had to etch the aluminum foil with like work to create interesting detail and eye flow to their piece. Finally, they created the illusion of a weathered metal appearance using shoe polish and the selective buffing method.
This is one you can try at home. Materials used: pencils, chipboard, puffy paint, glue, aluminum foil, shoe polish.

Fun Buckets! It's pretty much their second favorite time of the day - after recess, for Mrs. Geranen's class at Catlyahah.
The kids get to pick an activity to work on until Rise and Shine begins in the morning.
This year Rise and Shine is presented through a Google Meet projected on our Smartboard in each class. This procedure allows the site to continue with its Great Expectations model and remain classroom cohorts.
2nd grade students participate in a STEM activity. STEM activities are a great way to stretch students' brains and increase problem-solving and critical thinking skills!

4th grade students were surprised by a book tasting! Mrs. Schell and Mrs. Harrison's classes spent time perusing books of different genres to learn more about each genre and identify their genre preference.
Which genre of book do you prefer?

5th graders in Mrs. Tidwell's class had fun with a STEM activity to see who could stack pencils the highest!
We love building STEM activities into lessons here at Claremont because it allows our students to think creatively and critically about solving a problem.
