Congratulations to Westside’s 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year, Karly Johnson! Mrs. Johnson is the 2nd grade teacher at Westside. She started teaching at CPS in 2018. She teaches because she believes every child is a gift who is able to accomplish great things. Mrs. Johnson is a leader through action. She is always willing to step up to help the Westside students and team be successful. She is truly a joyful spirit, an encourager at heart and a passionate teacher who pours herself into her students and the diverse needs of each child that enters her classroom. 📅The new dates are Friday, November 11th and Saturday, November 12th at 7 PM and Sunday, November 13th at 2 PM.

👋Let’s welcome Joshua Cunningham to the Zebra family in today’s New Teacher Feature!
👨🏫Mr. Cunningham is a new computer teacher and assistant wrestling/football coach at Claremore High School! He graduated from NSU with a Bachelors of Health and Human Performance and a Masters of Kinesiology. He is also a CHS alum, class of 2011!
👍His favorite thing about working at Claremore Public Schools is the commitment to quality. He teaches because he wants to be a positive male role model for his family and community and pass on what he’s learned to the younger generation. He chose to teach at CPS because he wanted to be planted in the community that brought him up and be part of the Zebra family he knows and loves.
‼️Some interesting facts about Mr. Cunningham are that he is a certified strength and conditioning specialist, he can cook/prepare any dish and he played football and wrestled for CHS! His hobbies include exercise, sports, swimming, recreational and professional cooking, camping and fishing.

JA Biztown is a simulated town designed to teach students about being part of a community and how working together and taking care of their finances is rewarding and fun. To prepare for the visit the students interview for jobs, run political campaigns and learn how to manage their money for the day!

Congratulations to Roosa Elementary’s 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year, Crystal Lakey! Mrs. Lakey teaches 3rd-5th grade special education. She has been at Roosa for ten years. She started out as a paraprofessional and has been teaching for the last five years. Her favorite thing about CPS is the different opportunities offered to the students and how supportive the admin is. Congrats Mrs. Lakey, we are so proud of you and honored to have you in the Zebra family!

👋Let’s welcome Lauren McSpadden to the Zebra family in today’s New Teacher Feature!
👩🏫Mrs. McSpadden is a new 9th-grade math teacher and assistant girls basketball coach at Claremore High School. She graduated from Rogers State University with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration.
👍When asked what she likes most about working at Claremore Public Schools, she said, “how kind and helpful the teachers and staff are to everybody.”
❤Mrs. McSpadden teaches because she loves connecting with students and helping them get better at math. She chose to teach at Claremore Public Schools because she graduated from RSU, so Claremore has a special place in her heart.
‼Some interesting facts about Lauren are that she played basketball at RSU, where she currently holds the “career block record” and “points scored in a single game” record. She was also the third person to join the 1000-point club. Her hobbies include basketball, traveling and nature photography.

Let’s welcome Ashley Henry to the Zebra family in today’s New Teacher Feature!
Ashley is a new 3rd-grade teacher at Catalayah Elementary. She graduated from OSU with a Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education and her Masters of Science in K-12 Education. She is also a CHS alum, class of 2017!
When asked what she likes most about working at Claremore Public Schools, she said “The environment is very positive! Along with the staff and students being awesome!”
When asked why she teaches, she said “I went into teaching because of working at Zebra Stripes and I realized just how much I loved it. I love learning new things and being able to share them with others to help them learn and grow! Every student is unique and I love getting to see them grow in different aspects.”
Some interesting facts about Ms. Henry are that she has a golden retriever named Nemo, She trained like an astronaut with the Neutral Buoyancy Lab, and she was the OSU Alumni Association Senior of Significance 2020-2021. Some of her favorite hobbies include being outside and at the beach!

Mrs. Shrum is a new Kindergarten teacher at Claremont Elementary. She graduated from NSU with a Bachelors of Early Childhood Education.
When asked what she likes most about working at Claremore Public Schools, she said “The communication and information presented in a timely manner. It is a very organized district. I have also been welcomed so endearingly into the CPS family. It’s been a very easy transition into a new position.”
When asked why she chose teaching, she said, “I teach because I have never remembered a time in my life that I haven’t had a passion for it. I have always known I’ve wanted to be a teacher of little children and have had many mentors and experiences that led me right to that. When I teach, the joy I have in seeing my students create or build on prior knowledge or understand something that they were skeptical of learning is indescribable. I just love being in the classroom and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else in life.”
Some interesting facts about Mrs. Shrum are that she is half Asian Indian. Her father came to the states 40 plus years ago and built a family in Chelsea, OK. Some of her favorite hobbies include cooking, running or going on long walks, traveling to and through new places, and going on adventures in the mountains or anywhere by the water.
