In honor of “I Love Public Schools Day,” we want to recognize someone who has been a major supporter of Claremore Public School over the years, Mr. Don McGuire!
When asked why Don is passionate about public school, he said “Because of two public school teacher's, I'm the first person in my family to graduate from both high school and college, as they encouraged me to go to college after the military... I'm 72 and just trying to be an encouragement to those teachers who have gone through so much and let them know that I’m grateful for what they do. It's teachers like them that made a difference in my life, and I want to encourage them and say thank you, I care."
Don was raised in Tulsa, but left to join the Army during Vietnam. When he came home from the service, he married his high school sweetheart, Sharon. He worked at a factory and would go to college at night, and eventually earned his degree in Criminal Justice. After he retired, he and his wife moved to Pryor to take care of his dad. He ended up being a substitute teacher at Pryor Middle School and High School for 9 years.
After his dad was moved to the VA center in Claremore, Don and Sharon bought a house near Westside Elementary to be close to him. They fell in love with Claremore and started taking donuts to Westside and Claremont, just to brighten the teachers’ days.

Kindergarten students made snow by mixing two common household ingredients; cornstarch and conditioner. These excited kiddos have snow to play with all month long!

In Mrs. Foster’s 5th grade computer class, students are learning basic parts of coding using computer language to build sequences and computer programs. Computer coding is a big portion of their computer science curriculum!!

4th grade students are learning how to play an instrument! During their time in music class with Mrs. Keener, students are getting the basics of playing guitar!

Westside's incredible counselor, Mrs. Lyons, visits classrooms around the school to teach social and emotional skills. This class helped identify emotions by viewing facial expressions and body language. Students enjoy the excitement and love that Mrs. Lyons brings to each lesson. 💖

Students are all smiles as they learn about DNA. 🧬 If you see one of Mrs. Tietz's students, ask them about phosphates, nucleotides, deoxyribose sugar and organic bases and they can tell you all about it! They even made their own DNA models. 👨🔬🥼🧪

In science class, students made a 3-D model showing the different layers of the Earth. 🌎It might seem like Earth is one solid rock, but it actually has an inner core, outer core, mantle and crust.
