Ernie Smart, a graduate of Claremore High School's Class of 1936, achieved remarkable acclaim in the world of sports without ever taking to the field.
After attending Oklahoma Military Academy for two years, he earned a journalism degree from the University of Missouri. Ernie became a prominent sports editor, first with the Claremore Progress and later with the Tulsa World, where his name became synonymous with Oklahoma prep sports coverage. Despite never having played sports himself, Ernie Smart's extensive career spanned 25 years, marked by his dedication to underdog stories, commitment to accuracy, and a distinctive flair for colorful writing. His contributions extended beyond the newsroom; he played an instrumental role in naming Zebra football field in honor of the Lantow brothers, Norman and Robert, who lost their lives in World War II.
Ernie Smart was recognized as the first sports writer to be inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame. He passed away in 1997 at the age of 79. Additionally, Ernie's downtown Claremore business establishment, Ernie's Pool Hall, was a local institution for over 50 years, where he often combined his love for writing with tending to his customers.🦓❤🖋
