
🎤 Who is afraid to speak in public?
Ms. Palmer’s 4th Grade English Language Arts teacher makes this new experience a little easier.
After working through the writing process, students read their reports to their class. Many students lack experience with public speaking, so Ms. Palmer gives them some options to make them feel comfortable. They could sit or stand at the front of the room. They could also choose to be on “The Voice,” which means that everyone faces away from the speaker, or choose “American Idol,” where everyone faces the speaker.
These strategies help students focus on being clear and concise instead of worrying about being in front of the class. These minor adjustments will help them build the confidence they need for future public speaking opportunities throughout their lives.

Do you remember having a journal as a student?
5th grade students at Claremont take time to write in their journals every day - sometimes with a prompt and sometimes free writing, getting to put to paper whatever is on their mind.
Writing is such an important, foundational skill for all students; it becomes more complex and inherent in schooling as students grow and mature. In addition writing is also good for social and emotional wellbeing.

If we were judging those facial expressions, we would infer they had a blast! ❤

🎨It stimulates your child’s senses. (Touch/feel, sight, smell, edible finger paint= taste)

Creating a safe and healthy learning environment is always important to CPS, but it is paramount during this season. Students need to stay hydrated and we certainly do not what to share germs.
Roosa students are reminding everyone in the district to remember their water bottles every day.

CPS is thankful to have lightboxes in our art programs. This one was donated by Mrs. Coffey's friend, an architect upgrading their tools. We are grateful for the community that sees the benefit of investing in our students.

Mrs. Brasher’s 3rd-grade class read Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot Candy by Margot Raven. A true story of the Berlin airlift and the candy dropped from the sky in West Berlin, Germany, in 1948.
Mrs. Brasher made the story come alive as the class made their own parachutes and dropped them from the playground equipment.

Our 4th baby has been added to this school year's dazzle of little Zebras.
Congratulations to Mr. David Burke and his wife, Kyla on the birth of their daughter, Harper Jo. Harper joined our Zebra family on January 7, 2022, weighing 7 lbs., 7 oz. and 19.5 inches long. Harper was greeted by big sister, Avery.

What do you remember about 2nd grade? Mrs. Mann's class will never forget when their teacher let them design her holiday sweatshirt.
Each student drew a holiday picture to be printed on the shirt. Eva, who got her drawing printed in the center, was the big winner!

Helping students understand how academics is essential in their everyday lives; teachers build the fundamentals into their everyday routine. Here, Pre-K students add their names to the "present" column then count together the number of absent students and the number of present students.

For 3rd graders, "the cold never bothered them anyway!"
Students are still enjoying outdoor recess - and will continue to do so until the weather no longer permits. Please remember to send your child to school in weather appropriate clothing, including a coat and gloves.
If your child does not have a coat, please let the teacher or counselor know.

Mrs. Devers’ 2nd grade class completed a how-to writing unit about hot chocolate! It included graphing and writing about their favorite way to drink hot chocolate. They used adjectives to describe hot chocolate and wrote how to make the perfect cup of hot chocolate. They ended the unit with an exploding hot chocolate science experiment to review the states of matter and chemical reactions, hot chocolate, and buddy reading outside on a beautiful day.

How early can you begin teaching students about STEM? At CPS we start as early as Pre-K in our STEM labs.
Our STEM Lab Facilitators use Sphero robots to introduce students to coding systematically. Here Pre-k students start to use the Sphero tilt option. Students are assigned an individual Sphero that they program/control with a tilt, touch, or swing of their tablet.
Each group used their tablet to control their robots and spread the paint to create a painting.

WIN time is an opportunity for teachers to respond to intervention based on a student's individual needs. In addition to face-to-face time with students, technology is a great way to individualize instruction during WIN time to make sure all students achieve at a high level and are given various ways to show their knowledge.
Pre-K - 8th graders participate in structured WIN time every day. CHS students, 9th-12th, have Encore built into their daily schedule to address these questions and an assigned academic advisor to walk them through their high school experience.

Running is good for your body, mind, and mental health. CPS is blessed to have PE teachers who sponsor running clubs for our elementary students. Running clubs meeting during and after school for those who want to go the "extra mile." Westside running club had its first two members reach the 25-mile medal this year! Congratulations to Finley and Rivers.

Building a community takes time to get to know each other. CPS understands the importance of creating that sense of community. On the first day back to school, Mrs. Newman's class shared one thing they received for Christmas. They passed the yarn between them to make sure everyone had a chance to talk and show how they were all connected. When everyone had taken a turn not only had they shared but the also realized they built a giant spiderweb!!
Next up, celebrate the New Year with a countdown and party horns at "midnight."

Mrs. Brasher’s 3rd grade class at Westside made a track for Botley in the STEM lab.
Botley is a robot and remote control combo that teaches kids beginner coding. Students program Botley by entering a code on the remote, and then Botley runs the code.
