Things are heating up over in Mrs. T's Pre-K classroom at Westside! These students are working hard in small groups during center time. Center work for these friends included shape matching, counting 1-10, ABC matching, magnet play, Lego train, and bristle blocks. Students also used colored pencils to decorate their names. They were so proud of being able to recognize their name or some of the letters! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Kindergarten students spend time in centers working on learning through play. Learning through play is one of the best ways for a child to develop a sense of adventure and nurture their imagination. What do you think these Kindergarten students are imagining as they play? #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Mrs. Beasley's 3rd grade class read the book, My Mouth is a Volcano. This is a story about waiting your turn and maintaining self control. After reading the book the students made a journal entry about how they can control themselves before they ERUPT!! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Procedures are some of the most important things taught - all year - but especially at the beginning of the year and these first graders are rocking their procedures! Ask your student about some of their classroom procedures. You might be surprised to find out that some of them are similar to the ones you use in your own home! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Mrs. Mann's class at Roosa enjoyed some SLIME TIME for a science lesson. They learned about problem-solving, measurements and just had a fun time. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Students in art class at WRJH are working hard on their Cubist self-portraits. In Cubist artwork, objects are analyzed, broken up, and reassembled in an abstracted form. Instead of depicting objects from a single viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from many perspectives to represent the subject in a greater context. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Second graders are learning about the differences between Fiction and Non-fiction this week. As a fun activity with their fiction read-aloud, Edwina the Emu, students created Emu's of their very own! Aren't they creative? #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Westside Elementary enjoys celebrating students. One of their favorite ways to let students know they see them doing the right thing is to recognize them with character awards. Teachers see something they admire in a student's behavior; they write it down and then display a photo of the student and their recognition proudly on their Hero Wall! The Hero Wall has become popular with the students, so we have decided to share it with you. Look at all these students we have to brag about on our first Westside Hero Wednesday! "The toe bone's connected to the foot bone...the foot bones connected to ankle bone..." 3rd grade began learning about bones in Mrs. Steuart's PE class at Claremont - and they found Mrs. Steuarts' lesson to be very "humerous!" #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Mrs. Blankenship's students at WRJH participated in an activity that helped them discover and set group expectations for the year's class. Students had to build towers using only index cards and 24 inches of tape. The process allowed the students to experience and deduct practical and disruptive teamwork skills, attitudes, and practices. Now that is an effective way to create ownership of classroom behavior. 5th grade at Claremont went on an adventure in Ms. Anderson's class with Survival Island! Students were given the challenge: you're stranded on an island - what 4 items do you take with you? Along the way, a "hiccup" was introduced: the island is sinking, it's inhabited by King Kong or zombies who only come out at night, there is a dangerous storm every 8 hours... In this problem-solving project, students had to work together in groups using their critical thinking skills to develop a survival strategy. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Mrs. Gillispie's students are learning to work cooperatively to save Sam. Sam is stuck on a boat, and how he got there is not essential, but Sam can't swim and the boat capsized. To get to shore, Sam needs to retrieve a life jacket from underneath the boat so that he can float to shore. The task is to save Sam by retrieving the life jacket from under the boat and putting it on Sam. Unfortunately, the only tools to use are paperclips - they cannot touch Sam, the boat, or the life preserver with their bare hands. Will they succeed and SAVE SAM? #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

The energy was off the charts as our little Zebras were greeted by our Hillcat friends from Rogers State University Athletics. In Mrs. Sanders's class at Westside, they are working on number sense for the next few weeks and the importance of recognizing number words and numbers quickly in groups, with tallies, dice, ten frames, in groups of ones and tens, and even on their fingers. This is so essential for math success in later grades! #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

Mrs. Naegele's students at WRJH participated in a team building/problem-solving activity this week. The leader was the only team member allowed to touch the puzzle pieces. The hard part- the leader had to keep their eyes CLOSED! The goal was for students to develop problem-solving strategies and the ability to communicate mathematically while working with a team. #CPSZEBRAPRIDE
