Roosa Elementary 3rd Grade classes brought the tradition of Corn
Husk Dolls to life by creating their own, blending creativity with cultural learning.❤🌾
The Native American legend of the corn husk doll tells of the Creator shaping the beauty of the Earth, including the plants, animals, and the Three Sisters—the sustainers of life: corn, squash, and beans. Among them, the Corn Husk was revered, and Native Americans crafted faceless corn husk dolls as a reminder to remain humble and never think oneself superior to others. Way to go, Zebras!🦓❤ #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

At Westside Elementary, our third graders have been diving deep into Native American history, exploring the rich traditions and cultures of various tribes through hands-on projects and research. 🌟
Ms. Palmer brought history to life this week with an incredible presentation for the entire third-grade wing. Drawing from her own Native American heritage, she shared her knowledge through captivating stories, traditional dances, and a display of cultural clothing.
She also explained the significance of each dance and the expectations within Native American traditions, offering our students a meaningful and authentic learning experience. 🦓❤️ #CPSZebraPride

One of CHS’s most cherished traditions is when football players ask staff members to wear their jerseys for the day. This heartfelt gesture is a way for the players to honor those who have impacted their lives.🦓❤
For our staff members, being asked to represent a student in this way is an honor but a meaningful reminder of the special bonds we build. It’s a tradition that celebrates both the student-athletes and the educators who play a crucial role in shaping their lives.💪🏽🏈❤ #CPSZEBRAPRIDE

At Catalayah Elementary, Mr. Winiecke’s music classes have been diving into the world of the xylophone! Did you know this percussion instrument has roots dating back to ancient Africa and Asia? Its name comes from the Greek words “xylon” (wood) and “phone” (sound), meaning “wood sound”.
Xylophones are not just fun to play—they help develop rhythm, coordination, and math skills as students explore patterns and pitches. Our little musicians are learning how to make this timeless instrument come to life! 🎵👏

🌽🌱 "The Three Sisters"
Roosa Elementary's Native American Club recently dove into the rich tradition of Indigenous gardening, exploring the significance of "The Three Sisters"—corn, beans, and squash. 🌽 Each plant has a vital role: Corn provides a natural structure for the beans to climb, while beans enrich the soil with essential nutrients. Squash and pumpkin vines spread across the ground, creating a protective "living mulch" that conserves water, prevents weeds and keeps small animals away from the precious crops. 🌱🍂
Inspired by these teachings, students crafted beautiful mosaics that capture the harmony and sustainability of this age-old practice. Their art celebrates how each plant supports the others, mirroring the values of teamwork and respect for nature. 🌧🦓 #CPSZebraPride #RoosaRocks #RoosaNativeAmericanClub
